Growing Dreams: The Greenhouse at Waukivory Estate

At Waukivory Estate, our newly built greenhouse is more than just a structure; it's a living, breathing testament to dreams, sustainability, and the joy of nurturing life. Inspired by a lifelong passion for gardening, this space is designed to flourish with vibrant energy and growth.

The greenhouse started as a personal dream, born from a love for planting, growing, and creating from nature. It's a lively space where everything inside is nurtured to grow. Beyond its beauty, it serves as a hub for cultivating plants that enhance the estate's offerings and support our vision for sustainable living.

Design and Features


Crafted with love and sustainability in mind, our greenhouse is built from recycled materials sourced from scrap yards, secondhand sites, and treasures found on the farm. This was a true team effort involving everyone at Waukivory, resulting in a space that's as practical as it is beautiful. With recycled hardwood benches, casement windows made from old doors, and a recycled brick floor with natural drainage, it's a testament to innovation and resourcefulness.

Plants and Produce


At the moment, our greenhouse is buzzing with seedlings for our first veg patch and a variety of medicinal herbs—something I'm really passionate about. As we expand, we'll be adding more foliage and flowers, making the estate even more inviting for guests to explore. It's not just a building; it's a place for growth and perhaps some fun events in the future.

Essential Greenhouse Elements

1.         Ventilation:
Proper ventilation is key to maintaining a healthy environment for plants. Our greenhouse is equipped with adjustable vents and louvres that allow us to control airflow effectively. This helps in regulating temperature and humidity levels, preventing the buildup of mould and ensuring that our plants can breathe freely. Good ventilation also aids in pollination and can help reduce pest infestations.

2.         Irrigation System:
We've installed a sophisticated irrigation system that ensures our plants receive consistent and adequate watering. This system includes drip lines and misting nozzles that deliver water directly to the roots, minimising evaporation and water wastage. It's set on a timer to maintain regular watering schedules, which is crucial for plant health, especially during dry spells.

3.         Natural Light:
The greenhouse is strategically positioned to capture the maximum amount of natural sunlight throughout the day. We've chosen materials for the structure that allow optimal light penetration while filtering harmful UV rays. This ensures that our plants get the light they need for photosynthesis, promoting vigorous growth and vibrant blooms.

4.         Insulation:
Insulation is vital for maintaining a stable internal climate, especially during the colder months. We've used double-glazed panels and thermal screens that help retain heat, reducing the need for artificial heating. This not only keeps our plants warm but also contributes to energy efficiency, aligning with our sustainability goals.

5.         Shelving and Space:
Our greenhouse is designed with versatile shelving systems that maximise space and organisation. Adjustable shelves allow us to accommodate different plant sizes and types, ensuring easy access for care and maintenance. This setup helps us make the most of our space, allowing for a diverse range of plants to be grown simultaneously.

We see the greenhouse as a fantastic spot for bringing people together. Imagine workshops where local artisans, like soap makers and florists, share their skills with both our guests and the community. These events will be a chance to learn, connect, and enjoy some creative time together.

We've got big plans for the greenhouse. We're looking to grow tough, drought-friendly plants that suit our climate, and create lovely spaces for our bees to enjoy. With eight kids around, growing our own veg is a must, helping us take care of the land and our family.
